The organisers of MC14 applied to Morecambe Town Council’s Festivals & Events Sub Committee for a £7,000 contribution towards the costs of staging the 2014 Morecambe Carnival. This was rejected and instead, an offer of £1500 was made, with the stipulation that this should be used for the day time procession only. In addition, there were a number of conditions attached to the awarding of this grant, not least that Morecambe Town Council’s logo and branding be featured prominently in all aspects of publicity material for the 2014 Carnival.
The MC14 organisers held a vote at their September meeting and it was unanimously decided that, notwithstanding the obvious vote of No Confidence being signalled by our elected Town Council, this 7% contribution simply did not make economic sense, given the costs involved to incorporate the Town Council’s patronage into the Carnival publicity material.
For this reason, the MC14 committee decided to reject the offer.
Fortunately, The Bay Radio have stepped in and have offered to fund the Finale event with an outside broadcast stage from 12pm, to be held in the Festival Arena. This will continue through into the evening and will feature live music, entertainment and a mystery headline act.
Needless to say, the MC14 committee are enormously grateful for The Bay’s continued and generous support of our event, especially as we see it as essential to round off the Carnival procession with a Finale event, to encourage people to remain in central Morecambe and enjoy the party.
MC14 are not content with simply bringing back the Carnival in its old incarnation. If it is to be successful and relevant it must change and adapt to provide a new and exciting event which will: be appealing to the people of Morecambe, attract visitors and promote Morecambe in a positive way.
With this in mind, the MC14 organisers are now busy sourcing new funding and we are pleased to announce a £2,500 contribution from English Lakes Hotels towards our Fighting Fund.
Rest assured, the 2014 Morecambe Carnival will go ahead as planned and watch this space for more announcements about the events planned for the weekend of the May 2014 Bank Holiday.
