When I first got involved with the Morecambe Carnival event it was obvious that the team were on a mission. How fantastic would it be to bring a festival to Morecambe, with a parade of colourful floats down the beautiful promenade, which was free for everyone!
Delivering a successful event, which is free to attend, means that we have to raise the money each year. To help with this I’ve attended a training course around Fund Raising and sent out funding bids. With the rest of the team I have approached local businesses to help with sponsoring the event. We are so very grateful to everyone who has helped us to raise the huge sum needed to put on the event.
My role in delivering the event over the festival weekend is to look after Artiste Liaison for the Arena Stage. When they arrive on site I book the Artistes in and try to keep a track of their movements. I make sure they are interviewed and photographed for any publicity. Hopefully I can then get them stage-side on time and in good spirits so they perform well. They can be slippery though especially when they spot a watering hole they fancy!
I will have booked hotel rooms, taxi cabs and trains to help get everyone there. I will have shopped for dressing room riders (blue smarties and Manuka honey anyone??). I make sure that the green room has coffee and tea and perhaps a cheeky bit of fizz for after the show. I make sure there are make-up mirrors and places to change into stage clothes. I keep in touch with stage crew so I can react to any changes in running order or time slots so that the Arena Stage show is kept supplied with right artiste at the right time. Live shows have a way of galloping along and you have to be on your toes to keep up.
Volunteering is in my blood. As well as helping on the MC committee I am a member of a local Scout Group where I help run a Beaver Scout section. Volunteering brings its own rewards. Knowing that I have helped create a wonderful weekend of fun packed activities and stunning music that around 60,000 people have enjoyed, well that’s pretty special.
