I absolutely love Morecambe and have volunteered at numerous local Festivals and events for years as well as holding other voluntary positions i.e. Trustee, School Governor etc. When I was invited to be part of the newly formed Carnival Team in 2014 I jumped at the chance. My children took part in the Carnival in the 70s and I knew the positive effect the Carnival had then for the area.
I love contributing to the event which brings enjoyment, free of charge, to local children and their families as well as visiting public. We work all year round as volunteers to put on the Carnival and it is hugely rewarding. My role is ensuring we have sufficient food Concessions, craft and charity stalls and, probably more exciting, acquiring the various ad hoc attractions which add to the visitor experience. I also assist in the fundraising activities essential for us to be able to put on the Carnival.
My role over the weekend is, initially, to set out the stalls and stands. This starts at 6pm Friday evening and continues 7am Saturday morning to ensure everyone is ready for the public by 10am. Throughout the weekend I liaise with the stallholders and the attractions ensuring everything runs smoothly as scheduled. This is varied and sometimes hectic. I may be accompanying the Stormtroopers around the site (see photo), assisting in clearing the beach of personnel ready for the Parachutists, ensuring the arena is ready for the Sheepdog duck herding or local dance troupe or assisting with crowd control during the parade. Every year is different but seeing the smiles on the children’s faces makes it all worthwhile.
I am extremely proud to be part of the small Carnival Team. We are a dedicated, hard working group of people passionate about the Carnival ethos i.e. providing a full, free, vibrant, colourful, varied and exciting weekend of fun on Morecambe Promenade (to me the best backdrop in the Country).
